Sleeping on a Silk Pillowcase: Hype or Worth It?

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase is said to have several benefits for your skin and hair. Think: more shine, fewer split ends and tangles, fewer sleep lines, and even better skin hydration. Sounds great, right?

But… does it actually work?

I decided to test it myself and bought a silk pillowcase from Silkmood.

First impressions: luxurious and comfortable

The pillowcase is made from 100% mulberry silk, which is considered one of the highest quality types of silk. And you can definitely feel that.

The fabric is incredibly soft and smooth, with a slightly cool touch. Compared to cotton, it feels much less rough or “harsh.” Sleeping on it is simply more comfortable.

Honestly, I don’t think I’d want to go back to a cotton pillowcase anymore. Even if silk didn’t have any extra benefits for skin or hair, the comfort alone would be enough for me. I can also imagine it being perfect for summer, since silk is breathable and temperature-regulating.

What about your skin?

Because silk is so smooth, there’s less friction between your skin and the pillow. This could help reduce sleep lines.

Does it actually prevent wrinkles? I’m a bit skeptical about that. Wrinkles are mainly caused by UV exposure and natural collagen loss. Still, a smoother surface might help a little.

And let’s be honest: you spend about one-third of your life sleeping. So investing in a good pillow and pillowcase doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

And your hair?

This is where I noticed the biggest difference.

My hair is less tangled in the morning and much easier to brush. It also seems shinier. Since I haven’t changed anything in my haircare routine, I’d say the silk pillowcase is likely responsible.

Funny enough, my boyfriend used to wake up with hair going in every direction. Since we’ve both been sleeping on silk pillowcases, that’s improved a lot. That alone shows that silk causes less friction — and therefore less damage to your hair.

My conclusion

Is this backed by solid scientific research? Not really. It’s definitely not a double-blind randomized study.

But based on my own experience, I do see some clear benefits:

  • Gentler on skin and hair
  • Fewer tangles and easier brushing
  • More shine
  • Feels luxurious and comfortable

For me, that’s more than enough reason to keep using it.

One small downside

The only drawback is the maintenance. Silk needs to be washed at a low temperature and preferably with a special detergent.

Final thoughts

Whether it truly works miracles or not — it just feels amazing to sleep on. And honestly, sometimes that’s reason enough 😉
