Buyer's guide: how to choose a quality silk duvet?
Silk Envelope
More luxurious and more expensive.
A silk envelope must have a minimum of 19 momme to guarantee strength and durability. Below 19 momme, wear problems may appear.
-
Silk filling: the essential element
Not all silk fillings are created equal.
There are two main types:
– Long-fiber mulberry silk
– Short-fiber mulberry silk
– Wild silk (Tussah)
– Waste or recycled silk
– Hand-drawn silk
– Machine-drawn silk
Long-fiber mulberry silk is the highest quality.
It is fine, soft, naturally pearly white, and has a fresh scent.
Tussah silk (wild silk) is coarser, browner, and less luxurious. When treated, it becomes paler but loses its natural structure.
Hand-Stretched Silk
The silk is washed, hand-stretched, and naturally air-dried without additives or bleaching agents.
The long fibers are layered, trapping air between the layers.
Result:
– Lighter and more breathable duvet
– Better temperature regulation
– Superior comfort
– Increased durability
Machine-spun silk
Rapid industrial production.
Less air trapped between the fibers.
Chemical treatments may be used to bleach or soften the fiber.
Less expensive silk comforters are usually filled with short fibers, machine-spun silk, or a silk/synthetic blend.
For a silk comforter of For quality, always choose long-fiber mulberry silk.
-
The filling weight
The weight of the silk determines the warmth of the duvet.
At Silkmood, we offer three weights:
180 g/m²: ideal for summer
320 g/m²: ideal for spring and autumn
180 + 320 g/m²: two combinable duvets for winter
-
The inspection zipper
A quality silk duvet has a long inspection zipper.
It allows you to check the actual quality of the filling.
-
Quilted or unquilted duvet?
Lower-quality silk duvets are often quilted (quilted across the entire surface).
This is necessary when the filling consists of short fibers or industrial silk, to prevent the filling from shifting.
A high-end silk duvet, made of long, continuous fibers, does not need full quilting.
The long fibers cover the entire width of the duvet and are simply secured at the edges.
